Dussehra, which is often called as Vijayadashmi, is a festival which is celebrated with much excitement and enthusiasm on the tenth day of Ashvin month which often falls in the month of September or October, according to the Hindu calendar in the northern and eastern India. It marks the end of the nine days fasting period of Navratri according to the Hindu culture. In west Bengal and nearby states, this day is also called as ‘Durga Puja’ in which immersion of the idol of Goddess Durga takes place.
The day is celebrated to celebrate the killing of Demon Ravana by Lord Rama and thus gives us a message that good also wins over evil which we should also inculcate in our life. . It signifies the end of Durga Puja for those in eastern and northeastern states of India and commemorates the victory of goddess Durga over Mahishasura, the demon king spreading the message of the victory of good over sin.
There are a many mythological tales associated with this festival. According to Ramayana, the king of Lanka, Demon Ravana was killed by Lord Rama on this day as revenge because he abducted Goddess Sita, wife of Lord Rama. According to another mythological tale, Goddess Durga killed demon Mahishasura which was a true model of cruelty .

In West Bengal, as a part of ‘Durga Puja’, People visit the Pooja Pandals wearing new clothes and pray there. People prepare traditional food items at home and celebrate the festival with their friends and families. The festival is celebrated across cities in India and in Nepal. Many end the celebrations in a way by taking part in processions to a nearby river or sea-side to immerse the clay statues of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Durga.
